Members’ Annual Fishing Match.

  • In 2023, club member Bob Greenwood volunteered to organise an annual members’ fishing match with the support of the committee. The match, which usually happens in May, has been run each  year since and is still organised by Bob. Details of next year’s match will be published on this page and on our Facebook page.  The following gives details of the match rules (which will be confirmed or updated on the day) and also previous winners.
Sugar Mill Ponds Angling Club Annual Members’ Match Rules.
  1. The dates and duration of the competition will be determined by the committee and organiser and published accordingly.
  2. Places for the match are on a first come first served basis until the entry is deemed full.
  3. An agreed entry fee will be required, and all monies will be distributed as prizes for first, second and third places (decided on greatest total weight of fish caught). The division of monies as prizes will be decided by the organiser and communicated before the match.
  4. The west pond will be closed to members, other than competitors, on the day of the match until one hour after the match has ended. Notices will be placed around the ponds to notify of the match well in advance.
  5. Peg positions will be decided by a draw on the morning of the match.
  6. Once the draw is complete competitors may proceed to their drawn peg, water may be broken to plumb the depth and to set keepnet/s, but no bait or ground bait should enter the water until the start signal.
  7. Tackle, baiting restrictions and conduct will be in line with club rules.
  8. Competitors may use only one rod at a time during the competition, but other unbaited rods/poles may be set up ready for use if placed safely away from the water’s edge and not restricting the paths.
  9. Competitors must cease fishing as soon as the finish signal is given. However, a fish hooked before the finish signal may be played, landed and added to the keepnet.
  10. Awards will be made on the day in the car park after the weigh in and results recorded.
  11. The match organiser and/or a designated committee member will act as the official for the match and their decisions on any matters arising will be final.
  12. A shield will be awarded to the winner and engraved with the winner’s name and retained by the winner for 11 months. First second and third places will also receive a small replica shield or trophy.
