1.2 This policy is aimed to enable the committee and club members to make informed and confident responses to specific child and/or vulnerable adult protection issues.

2.2 The committee may receive disclosures of abuse and observations of individuals who are at risk.
2.3 Any SMPAC member can raise a concern about individuals thought to be at risk.
- Definition of Abuse
3.1 Abuse is a violation of an individual’s human and/or civil rights by any other person or persons.
3.2 Abuse may consist of a single act or repeated acts. It may be physical, verbal or psychological, it may be an act of neglect or an omission to act, or it may occur when a child and/or vulnerable adult is persuaded to enter into a financial or sexual transaction to which he or she has not consented, does not understand or cannot consent. Abuse can occur in any relationship and it may result in significant harm to children and/or vulnerable adults.
3.3 The Department of Health and Social Care has identified the following as the main types of abuse:
3.3.1 Physical abuse – including hitting, slapping, pushing, kicking, misuse of medication, restraint or inappropriate sanctions.
3.3.2 Sexual abuse – including rape and sexual assault or sexual acts with a child or, with a vulnerable adult who has not consented, does not understand, or could not consent, or was pressured into consenting.
3.3.3 Psychological abuse – including emotional abuse, threats of harm or abandonment, deprivation of contact, humiliation, blaming, controlling, intimidation, coercion, harassment, verbal abuse, isolation or withdrawal from services or supportive networks.
3.3.4 Financial or material abuse – including theft, fraud, exploitation, pressure in connection with wills, property or inheritance or financial transactions, or the misuse and/or misappropriation of property, possessions and/or benefits.
3.3.5 Neglect and acts of omission – including ignoring medical or physical care needs, failure to provide access to appropriate health, social care and/or educational services, the withholding of the necessities of life, such as medication, adequate nutrition and heating.
3.3.6 Discriminatory abuse – including racist, sexist, that based on a person’s disability, age or sexuality and other forms of harassment, slurs or similar treatment.
3.3.7 Organisational abuse – Organisational or institutional abuse is the mistreatment of people brought about by poor or inadequate care and/or support, or systematic poor practice that affects the whole care setting. It occurs when the individual’s wishes and needs are sacrificed for the smooth running of a group, service or organisation.
3.3.8 Self neglect – refers to an unwillingness or inability to care for oneself and/or one’s environment. It encompasses a wide range of behaviours, including hoarding, living in squalor, neglecting self care and personal hygiene, plus sexual, financial and emotional matters.
- Suspected Abuse: Actions to be taken
4.1 Any suspicion, allegation or incident of abuse must be reported to the East Riding Safeguarding Team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, on that working day where possible.

4.3 SMPAC has a nominated Safeguarding Officer and who be contacted via email secretarysugarmillponds@gmail.com . Suspected cases of abuse observed by or reported to a member of the Committee should be actioned in accordance with subsection 4.1.
